Return To Gordon’s

by John Weckerle

On May 29, we reviewed the newly opened Gordon’s Italian Restaurant on North 14, at the former location of Kokopelli’s Restaurant.  We returned to Gordon’s last night, and are pleased to report that things now seem to be running smoothly, and the service issues we discussed in our first review appear to have been resolved.

I ordered the bowtie pasta with smoked salmon and cream sauce and a Caesar salad, and my wife ordered the pork chop and a bowl of zesty potato soup.  When I asked our server whether there was any meat in the soup, he correctly interpreted the question and asked the chef whether there was any meat stock used in preparation (alas, chicken stock was included, so I could not taste the soup, but my wife said it was delicious).  He also asked if I wanted anchovies – a very appropriate but uncommon question, at least in New Mexico – a question I answered in the affirmative.  I was surprised to find that the anchovies were either lightly pickled or marinated, providing an unexpected and very pleasant taste.  The pasta was very nicely prepared, and the hot-smoked salmon imparted a hearty flavor to the dish.  While I did not sample the pork chop, I was told it was delicious.  I did sample the scalloped potatoes and the vegetables that came with it, and both were excellent.

The service was also excellent, and food arrived promptly.  We are now more than comfortable in recommending Gordon’s as a great place for quality dining at an affordable price, with excellent and creative Italian food in a pleasant atmosphere.
