January At Bethel Community Storehouse

By Bob Steiner

Regular readers of the blog know that we have  previously reported on the great work being done at the Bethel Community Storehouse in Moriarty.  This outstanding donor-based charitable organization has been serving the needs of  less fortunate citizens in the valley for more than twenty two years.  Supported mainly by donations from area churches, civic organizations, and private citizens, the storehouse on a given “average” month last year provided services to more than 750 families (1750 people). This number surged to  1100 families (3000 residents) during the recent Christmas season.  It appears that this increase in clients will continue during the coming months. With limited donations coming in, a great burden has been placed on the storehouse staff to see that the people are being served.

While the  majority of clients receive food assistance and used clothing, housewares and some furniture  are also available at the facility. Book collectors should note there is  a large inventory of old books on hand which are sold at truly bargain prices.  Come by and browse!

The storehouse is staffed mainly by a capable cadre  of some twenty to thirty volunteers, many of whom have been there for more than ten years. While the holiday season is now past, in view of the present economic  conditions.  many residents still have urgent needs. Monetary and food donations are the main areas where the most focus is presently needed (It should be pointed out that a large percentage of funds brought in is used to purchase needed food from New Mexico “Road Runner” Food Bank. This, even though much food from the food bank is given to the storehouse at no charge). Used children’s clothing is also needed.  To  insure the operation of the facility runs smoothly, friendly volunteers are always being recruited.  There is a weekly orientation for  those interested in becoming volunteers every Thursday at 10 A.M.

Readers having  questions regarding any of this fine organization’s activities should call the storehouse direct at 832-6642. Please remember your valley neighbors during this time of need!

Great follow-up Bob. Looks like we are in for along winter and a slow haul.

  2. Bob – Bethel also has a substantial Mountainair clientele, mostly through the Senior Center. I’m starting with excerpt + appeal + link on Mtair Announcements and xref later on arts. Here’s hoping the appeal reaches receptive readers…

Bob, thanks for keeping the interest in what we’re doing going. Hunger does not stop just because the holidays are over so we appreciate any and all help for our neighbors in need. Linda
