Isn’t There Good News Anymore?

by J.A. Ueckert

This is usually a time of year when it seems especially  relevant to talk, discuss or openly rant about what is wrong, who is wrong or who is to blame for everything that is wrong about our community and our country.

In the midst of all this, I’d just like to take a moment to reflect on the things that are right about our little community and why I’m especially proud to live in Edgewood.

Every time I see a patrol car with “Edgewood Police” written on the side, I remember what a long, uphill grind it was to get here. I would have never imagined that I would be as proud of a Police Department as I am of Edgewood’s own.

I remember when nobody would respond to calls in Edgewood, and many folks around today still recall the line, “That’s not in our jurisdiction”, an excuse used so often, it was as if the same script had been delivered to all dispatch centers.

And the Edgewood Police are not our only front line heroes, but merely the most recent in a long and distinguished line, beginning with the Edgewood/Santa Fe County Fire Department whose now legendary professionalism and caring have contributed to the saving of countless lives and properties throughout the years.

Edgewood’s Animal Control officers have consistently done their job with the utmost tact and compassion and Vickie Murphy in particular has always displayed an “Above and Beyond” ethic to the performance of her duties.

Until Edgewood founded its own Road Department, there were roads, even in the center of town, that had never seen a grader.

And while the last eight years have seen only a small group of dedicated individuals who have served in the town’s elected positions, each one of our present and former mayors, councilors and judges has contributed substantially to establishing this town’s remarkable infrastructure and record of service to its residents.

So, as soppy as it sounds, I really do feel a swell of pride when I see what these fine folks are doing for our town.

To one and all, Thanks!
