Young Eagles Event in Moriarty This Saturday
by John Weckerle
Checking in on our friends at Mountainair Annoucements, we find that the Moriarty Chapter of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association, an international aviation association founded in 1953) Chapter will be sponsoring a Young Eagles Event and providing free airplane rides at the Moriarty Airport this Saturday, February 27, beginning at 8:30 a.m. In the case of bad weather, the event will take place on Sunday, February 28. For more information on the event, see the City of Moriarty Municipal Airport Page.
Formerly chaired by actor Harrison Ford, and now co-chaired by Sully Sullenbirger and Jeffrey Skyles, the Young Eagles Program was founded in 1992 to give young people ages 8 to 17 the opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. The flights are provided by volunteer pilots throughout the world. For more information, check out the Young Eagles Program’s web site and the EAA Young Eagles web page. While you’re at it, have a look at the other programs, including but not limited to the Young Eagles Air Academy and scholarship/internship programs. These seem like great programs for young people interested in aviation, and we wish the Moriarty Chapter good flying this weekend.

Let The Candidates Speak!
by John Weckerle
In a letter to the Mountain View Telegraph this week, Edgewood Mayor Bob Stearley endorses incumbent Town Council member Glenn Felton and essentially pans both incumbent Rita Loy Simmons and former Council member Chuck Ring. Mr. Stearley’s endorsement and criticisms – which likely do not surprise those familiar with the political climate of Edgewood – gave us pause for thought. In an area where newspapers are published only weekly, the point-counterpoint nature of electoral politics can be difficult on candidates. So, for all intents and purposes, we’re throwing New Mexico Central open to the candidates.
From now until elections are held, any candidate in a local or county election within our coverage area (Sandias, Manzanos, and the Estancia Valley), may publish anything he or she wishes until elections are held. Let us make this clear: for candidates ONLY, editorial policies will be waived with the caveat that libel is a serious charge and it will be they, and not we, who pay the price of false statements of fact. Any photos should be optimized for web use. Candidates are encouraged to send us an e-mail at editor@nm-central.com, and we will provide a user name, password, and other information to get you started. Candidates may submit their first article via e-mail; however, we ask that formatting be held to a minimum in e-mail submissions and cannot guarantee that formatting will be perfectly preserved.
We will be e-mailing a copy of this article to all the candidates for whom we have e-mail addresses; however, we don’t have all of them, and ask our readers to alert their favorite candidates to this opportunity.

Wild, Wicked Winter Weather Whiteness Worsens
by John Weckerle
A winter storm of somewhat unexpected intensity has descended upon the Estancia Valley and the West Mountains, forcing your editor to abandon his vehicle about 100 yards from New Mexico Central headquarters (thankfully, in the driveway). Road conditions are bad and getting worse. According to NMRoads.com:
Interstate 40 through the Canyon and especially Sedillo Hill are slushy to snow packed. NM 333, NM 14, NM 337 and NM217 are snow packed. Use caution and reduce your speed. Crews are working the area.
The cameras along 1-40 do not appear to be working any longer, and NMRoads.com is ending sessions faster than Congress during an election season. If you’re home, we suggest you stay there – and if you’re about to head for home, be extra careful. Let’s hope this all clears up in time for us to see tomorrow’s New Year’s Eve blue moon – if not, we’ll have to wait another 19 years for a repeat.
Wolves Wend Way to Wildlife West
by John Weckerle
Yesterday saw the arrival of three very important personages at Albuquerque’s Double Eagle Airport aboard an aircraft provided by Lighthawk, a conservation organization of volunteer pilots providing support to environmental and ecological efforts. Three Mexican grey wolves arrived from the National Zoo to begin the last leg of the trip to their new home – Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood, New Mexico. The plane was scheduled to return east with a retired female wolf from the Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility, bound for New York.
The arrival of the male and two females represents a substantial increase in Wildlife West’s participation in the wolf recovery effort, more than doubling the Park’s population of lobos. The new arrivals will take up residence in new habitat space adjacent to the existing wolf enclosure.
The Park’s Christmas present comes with a price, however; food, veterinary care, and other expenses will require financial resources that are already strained. Those wishing to help the Park and its participation in the wolf recovery program would do well to visit the Park’s web site and consider making a donation; any support would certainly be appreciated.
